By: Sara Jordan Kathryn gave up and opened her eyes. There was just no way she was going to get to sleep. Maybe she should go down to sick bay and talk to the Doctor. After all, there was no shame in a Captain's admitting to so simple a medical problem. She hadn't had a good nights sleep in almost a week. It was starting to show in her behavior on the bridge and that was something she could not allow to happen. They might still be stuck in the Delta Quadrant, but she was still a Starfleet Captain. Then again, maybe it would just go away like it had every night so far. Maybe a different position would help? She sighed and rolled onto her left side. She crooked her arm under her pillow and looked at Chakotay's sleeping face. He looked so peaceful that she wanted to kick him. She resisted the urge, mainly because she liked to watch him sleep but so rarely got the opportunity. Her eyes roamed leisurely over his seamless brow, across the lines of his tatoo and down the outline of his strong jaw. His eyelashes rested on his cheeks. His breathing was slow and steady, his lips slightly parted. Kathryn suddenly realized that her nausea was gone. (That certainly was a welcome relief.) She knew she should try to get to sleep now, but it was difficult to take her eyes off the sleeping figure beside her. "Kathryn, why are you staring at me?" he asked without opening his eyes. "How did you know?" she asked with a chuckle. He reached out and drew her closer to him. She snuggled into the curve of his body. "Haven't you learned by now that I can always feel what you are doing?" "Even when you are asleep?" "Of course." "How lovely." Chakotay pulled away so he could look into her eyes. "You were sick again weren't you." "Only a little, it's gone now." "Then you should get some sleep. You need your rest. The Doctor said it's very important." "I heard him. I don't think it's anything to worry about, humans have been having babies for a long time now and I don't think anyone has suffered any long term effects from morning sickness." Chakotay reached down and tenderly stroked her abdomen. "That may be true. But, this is my first child and I'll worry if I want to." Kathryn smiled. He was so perfect. So caring and sensual. And he was hers. Forever. "O.K. worry-wort, you win. The baby and I are tired, we'll go right to sleep if you promise to keep saying things like that. My emotions are so jumbled right now that I need to keep hearing it." "No problem." He gave her a long tender kiss that hinted of a desire for more, but he didn't release that need. His concern for the health of his child and his wife let him settle for a warm embrace. As he caressed her hair and back, Kathryn quickly sank into an exhausted sleep. With a contented sigh Chakotay let himself drift off, with Kathryn still wrapped in his arms.
Captain Janeway hurried down the corridor toward the turbo lift. She was going to be late reporting for duty - not the example she wanted to set for the crew. Chakotay had let her sleep late this morning and she had to admit she did feel better. She had tried to reprimand her husband for making the Captain late, but he had only laughed at her, told her to get dressed and eat the breakfast he had made. He left shortly after to debrief the third shift before Senior officers reported for duty. Kathryn bristled at the thought of her First Officer summarily assuming duties that strictly belonged to the Captain, but was immediately ashamed. He had only done what any good exec did for their Captain, namely to make things easier for the Captain during periods of difficulty. She knew herself well enough to admit that her irritation came not from Chakotay's presumption but from the sense of protocol which she knew she would never shed. She had probably shaken off as much of her Starfleet code of conduct as she was able when she had accepted Chakotay's proposal. She thought back to the first 3 years of their journey here in the Delta Quadrant. Those were the years of resistance. She had fought her attraction to Chakotay with all she had. She had feared that by accepting his love for her she would give up too much of the emotional distance that was necessary for command. She knew better now. Then early in their fourth year Chakotay had changed her mind. It had been sheer luck that had led them to discover the Borg "space gate". The crew had been so excited when Harry reported quantum signatures which matched log entries from the Enterprise. She had authorized an attempt to open the device. Using the records from the Enterprise's encounter in the Alpha Quadrant it had worked. They had leaped across the sector, and in moments traveled a distance that normally would have lasted many months. There had been a huge celebration. It was at the party that she had first allowed herself to interact with Chakotay in a more personal capacity. It had been nothing improper of course. Just a walk alone on the Holodeck beach, and a lingering touch. It had felt so right that she did not want it to end. Chakotay then began to double his efforts to find legitimate reasons for them to be alone. When the crew did not fall apart over their changing relationship, a few like B'Elanna and Kes even going so far as to privately encourage her, she had agreed to meet Chakotay half way. Their relationship began slowly with dinner in the mess hall where their discussions were half business and half staring into each other's eyes, and public activities on the Holodeck. She had gone out of her way to ensure that they spent very little time completely alone. Then, after a few months dinner more and more frequently came in someone's quarters and the Holodeck adventures gave way to long nights in bed... The crew had taken their changing relationship is stride. In fact they seem to approve. After all the Captain and First Officer were not the only ones pairing up. Life had to go on, and as the crew saw it what better way to ensure that than by finding someone to share the journey with? Their courtship had lasted about 8 months when they made what was by now a routine stop at the planet Bre'Tun. The population had been sympathetic and generous in its agreement to allow re supplying of Voyager. Janeway had enthusiastically accepted the government's request for a cultural exchange. It had allowed for both discovery and much need shore leave for all the crew. A wonderful opportunity to fulfill Starfleet's charter. It was on the planet that Chakotay had asked her to marry him. They had spent a lovely day planetside, and he had talked her into a moonlit stroll before returning to the ship. Both of Bre'Tun's moons had risen that night casting a pale red glow on a beautiful landscape. She would never forget his little speech. "Kathryn," he had begun, "you do love me don't you? I mean truly love me?" She had lain her head on his shoulder as they walked arm in arm. "Of course I do. I may not say it in as many ways as you seem to, but I try to let you see it. Please don't ever doubt that you are the center of my heart." He stopped walking and turned her to face him. "Captain, can you detect any detrimental effects from our relationship on the crew of Voyager at this time?" he asked in his best EO voice. She pulled on her Captain's face and answered in her command tone, "No, Commander, I will have to admit that our crew has adapted more easily than I had anticipated." Then he had smiled at her and on cue her knees had turned to jelly and her pulse to race. "Kathryn, I do see that you love me. I see it in every move you make, the way you walk, in your eyes when you look at me and think no one can see, even the way you issue commands. Marry me Kathryn. We know the depth of our love, I want the rest of the galaxy to see it too." She had been stunned by his proposal. She barely remembered his asking her to consider it before giving an answer. The transport back to the ship and the walk to her quarters were a blur. She seemed to recall him telling a story, but she was not able to even suggest its topic. She had spent a sleepless night trying to weigh the possible negative implications of accepting. In the morning her list for refusal was short and spawned mainly from fear and her rigid foundation in Starfleet regulations. Her list for acceptance was even shorter, and based solely on the fact that he had become the center of her universe. It had lain before her in black and white, she was already as bound to him as any being could be to another. There were no real reasons to say no, but could she say yes?
At dinner that night in her quarters she gave him her answer. "Chakotay, I have considered your proposal. I examined my duties as Captain, both to the ship and to the crew. I reviewed Starfleet regulations. And as you have taught me, I looked into my heart." Chakotay's face had gone deathly pale. She could see his pulse pounding at his temple, his breath came in short draws as if he couldn't make his lungs function properly. "Chakotay, you are my soul. Without you I am incomplete. There never has been anyone I loved more, and there never will be. You are everything to me. Will you marry me?" His smile had spread like wildfire from his lips to his eyes and into his heart. With an eagerness she recognized he rose from the table and pulled her to her feet. He looked into her eyes and began to stroke the auburn hair falling on her shoulder. He pulled her close to him and placed a delicate kiss on her neck. "You are the most beautiful, intelligent, confident, most compelling spirit in the universe," he breathed into her ear. "Kathryn. I accept with all my heart. My life is yours, take it and do as you will." She had kissed him then. A hard, passionate, demanding kiss that had ended only when he swept her into his arms and carried her to her bed. They had cleared the half eaten meal the next morning. The ceremony had taken place two months later. She had turned command over to Tuvok. As acting Captain he had performed the ceremony with dignity and sincerity. It had been the happiest day of her life, she had finally realized the depth of the crew's approval of her relationship with Chakotay. She had been liberated from the fear of broken protocol. It had been one month before their first anniversary when she had learned she was pregnant. She had had no idea, but Kes had detected it immediately. The newest Voyager doctor had recommended a routine physical to confirm what her Ocompan gifts had told her. Kathryn smiled as she remembered her reaction. "Kes, you must be joking." "I'm afraid not Captain. You are definitely going to be a mother. I'm getting pretty good at spotting the signs without the use of medical equipment. This little one will make the fifth child born on board." Chakotay of course had been ecstatic. "Are you sure Kathryn?" he had asked with disbelief. She had smiled at his initial shock. "Yes love, I'm sure. Kes tells me that in 8 months or so we will have something else to keep us awake all night besides your snoring." She watched his face for any sign that this was something that he was not ready for, but her husband made it perfectly clear that he most definitely wanted this child. The smile and awe on his face created an expression that she would cherish all her life. Now, three months into her pregnancy she had to admit she was the happiest she had ever been in her life. Her drive to find a way to return her ship and crew to the Alpha Quadrant remained. But, now it was fired by the inextinguishable flame of hope for a life with Chakotay and their child. (or would it be children?) Her memories had passed through her mind as she traveled through her ship. Now as she exited the turbo lift she tucked them safely into her heart and donned her Captain's face. The senior officers were assembled and ready to begin the day as soon as their Captain gave the word. She smiled. Life was good. "Report Mr. Tuvok," she began.
Captain Janeway rose from her desk and waddled over to the replicator. "Herbal tea, hot, please." she ordered. She rubbed the small of her back as she waited for the cup to materialize. (I'd settle for relief from the ache in my shoulders or even my legs. Heck, any part of my body since I hurt all over.) Pregnancy had done little to slow the Captain down. Over the past 7 months she had adapted quite well to her changing body. But, there were times like tonight, when she had been too active for far too many hours, when she really knew she was pregnant. She absently laid a hand on her ripening middle as she picked up her cup and headed back to the pile of work. Her door chimed. "Come" she barked. I need some sleep, she thought. The door opened and Chakotay strode purposefully into her ready room. "Kathryn, how much longer do you plan to work tonight?" The Captain lowered herself into her chair. "How should I know? I'll work until I'm done." she snapped. "No you won't. You've been on duty for over 10 hours, you need to get some rest." Chakotay responded in that maddeningly calm voice of his. "Commander, don't try to order me around. This is my ship, I'll be the one giving orders!" Kathryn, that's not fair. He doesn't deserve that. Her husband only watched her as she slammed her cup down and turned back to the computer screen. His inexcitability only irritated Kathryn more. She wanted to fight and if he wasn't such a dolt he would cooperate and yell back. Oh come on Kathryn! When is the last time Chakotay yelled at anyone? He is the king of serenity. "Beat it Chakotay, I've got too much work to do." Chakotay calmly walked around her desk and pulled her to her feet. He reached out and took Paris' report on navigational diagnostics away from her. "The work will be here tomorrow, Kathryn. You and the baby need rest." He gently but firmly pushed her toward the door. "Just let me take Tom's report. I can finish it in our quarters." She said as she made a quick grab for that particular PADD. Chakotay expertly caught her arm and slid her small hand into his strong one. "No Kathryn." He led her back to their quarters and straight into the warm bath he had waiting for her. The bath, normally her favorite form of relaxation, did little to improve her mood. She came out of the bathroom dressed in her bathrobe and still wearing a slight frown. Chakotay was sitting on the bed. He could see the frown and knew how long her night would be if he couldn't get her to relax. "Come here Kathryn," he called gently. Kathryn sat beside her husband. "I'm sorry love, I know I'm being unfair to you. I just can't seem to help it." "Don't worry, you're just tired. Pregnancy is very demanding and you don't allow yourself enough slack. You're the Captain, you can't help that either." Chakotay slipped her robe away from her body and guided her down onto the bed. He covered her using the robe as a blanket to keep her warm wet skin from chilling in the air, and lay down next to her. "Roll on your side, Kath." Kathryn complied and Chakotay began to gently massage her back and shoulders. He didn't talk, but let his wife work out her mental tension as he focused on her body. Slowly he began to feel her muscles drain of their stress. He slid closer to her relaxing body and spooned himself against her back. He slid one arm under her auburn head and wrapped the other over her belly. He placed a tender kiss on her neck just behind her ear and whispered, "I love you." Kathryn sighed. What would she ever do without him? He always knew exactly what she needed, even when she didn't. She rolled over to face him, which given her girth required several grunts and manipulations. "Thank you." She smiled into his eyes and he could see she was close to tears. "Thanks for understanding, thanks for knowing what to do. Thanks for being everything I need." Chakotay held her tight radiating warmth and comfort. He flashed his heart stopping smile and kissed her. "Think you could eat now? I don't know about you, but the baby and I are starving." Kathryn laughed as she sat up and slipped back into her robe. "How do you know the baby's hungry?" She patted her middle. "Last time I checked, he was still in here." "A father has his ways," he said with a mischievous grin. "Come on. Neelix sent down some lasagna -- or as close to lasagna as Neelix is going to get." After eating Kathryn found her mood had swung from angry through sorrow and into contentment. There was only one thing more she needed to make the night truly special. She rose from the couch were she was lounging in Chakotay's arms and pulled her husband up with her. "I really enjoyed my back rub Chakotay. I think I should return the favor. Do you have any particular spot you'd like rubbed, or can I pick and choose?" Chakotay smiled and kissed his wife hungrily. "Surprise me." Kathryn slid her robe off once again, this time no longer worried about chilling her skin, and led him to their bed. She began to administer a massage of her own. Unlike Chakotay's work, hers was not meant to relax the receiver. When Chakotay could wait no longer, he pulled her down with him and returned the attention.
When the alarm went off the following morning Chakotay stretched with satisfaction. Memories of the previous night floated up from his dreams and he smiled. Reaching out he tried to find Kathryn to wake her with a gentle caress. He found only pillow. He sat up in bed and called into the bathroom, "Kathryn, are you up already?" --No answer. Maybe she left already. You know those reports have been calling her name all night, he thought. "Computer locate Captain Janeway." --Captain Janeway is not on board-- came the mellow reply. Chakotay felt his blood run cold. He leapt from the bed and began throwing on a uniform. "Chakotay to Bridge!" "Praxton here sir," came the immediate reply. "Mr. Praxton, the Captain is missing. Full stop! I want full spectral analysis of this sector. Contact all Senior officers I want them in the briefing room in 5 minutes." "Aye sir! Answering all stop. Full spectral analysis in 10 minutes." He paused, "All senior officers are on their way." "Very well, Chakotay out." He stomped himself into his last boot and sprinted out the door toward the bridge. (What has happened to Kathryn?) He vowed to tear the universe apart looking for her.
Kathryn knew something was wrong even before she opened her eyes. The light was too bright, Chakotay never raised the light level before she got out of bed. Speaking of the bed - that wasn't right either - much too hard and uncomfortable. Kathryn opened her eyes and tried to bolt upright when she discovered she was not in her quarters. (Unfortunately at 7 months pregnant 'bolting' was not an option.) Where was she? This was not her quarters. She listened, she no longer detected the subtle vibrations of her ship. She wasn't even on board Voyager! Looking down she noticed her clothing. How could she be in uniform? The last thing she remembered was making love to Chakotay and falling asleep in his arms. How had she ended up here? She tapped her combadge. "Janeway to Voyager." (no response) She tried again, "Janeway to Voyager, please respond." (still no answer). She paused and for the first time surveyed her surroundings. She was in a building, it was dilapidated and looked unused for a half century or so, but functional. There was a computer interface along one wall, the small couch she was sitting on, an uncovered window and two doors. Not much to go on. She laid a protective hand on her abdomen and gently stroked hoping to calm the kicking child within. "Time for your first course in Starfleet survival training, Little One," she said. "The first step is to catalogue the surroundings, let's take a look."
*****ON VOYAGER***** Chakotay stormed into the briefing room glancing at the faces of the senior staff as he made his way to the chair at the end of the table. No one looked happy. "Report," he ordered, "and for the spirit's sake some one give me some kind of an idea of what happened to my wife!" Harry cleared his throat uncomfortably. "Unfortunately, Commander, there's not much to report. Internal sensors indicate the Captain was in your quarters at 0514 this morning. At 0515 she was gone. We can find no evidence of transport or an intruder."
45 minutes, thought Chakotay, She vanished from my side and I didn't realize for 45 minutes. Some husband I am. He forced himself to push away the fear and self-doubt, what Kathryn needed now was his action not his tears. "Tuvok, did your investigation turn up anything?" The Security Chief looked as uncomfortable as was possible for a Vulcan. "No sir. Physical evidence at the Captain's last known location is inconclusive. Except for the disarray that you claim was created by your exit from the bed, nothing appears to be out of order." "Tom?" Chakotay asked quietly, already knowing the helmsman's answer. Paris frowned managing to convey sorrow and anger at the same time. "Navigational sensors detected no other vessels in the area. No ion trails, no warp signatures, nothing that would indicate another ship of any kind." "Damn!" Chakotay pounded his fist into the table with enough force to crack dilithium. He paused and with visible effort regained his composure. "Are you people telling me that the Captain disappeared from her own ship with absolutely no physical evidence?" No one offered any comment. Their concern for their Captain was real, but all realized that none was as frustrated and fearful as the First Officer.
Hang on Kathryn, thought Chakotay. I swear I will find you even if it means never getting back to the Alpha Quadrant.
Chakotay sat with Voyager's senior officers in the conference room. In the last twenty minutes no one had been able to come up with even one scientifically plausible explanation for what had become of their Captain. "There is one possibility that we haven't considered," growled B'Elanna from the end of the table. "Q." //Well, it's about time! I didn't think you puny humans would ever figure it out.// Chakotay looked around trying to spot the malevolent being known as Q. He could see no one. Apparently the voice had emerged from thin air, which was certainly possible for Q. "Q! Show yourself." ordered Chakotay. There was a flash of light and then a humanoid stood before the Commander. But, this was not the Q that they had met twice before. Nor was it the female Q that they had encountered in their second mix-up with the omnipotent being. This humanoid had blond hair and blue eyes. He smirked at Chakotay and flopped into a chair that suddenly materialized under him. "Who are you?" demanded Chakotay. "I thought we already covered that. I'm Q." The alien yawned in Chakotay's face and propped his legs on the briefing table. Chakotay glanced at his officers, but no one seemed to have any better grasp on the situation than he did. He very firmly took control of his anger and pushed it into a dark corner of his mind. Speaking through clenched teeth he turned to Q2, "You are not the Q we are familiar with. I assume you are another member of the Continuum?" The blond Q rolled his eyes. "Well of course I am. Honestly, I don't see why Q is so fond of you people. Your intelligence is limited and your minds so restrictive. But, I suppose that is why I'm here; to learn." Chakotay leaned down until his face was inches from the alien. Every muscle in his body screamed to reach out and wring the life out of this pompous and nauseating being, but he realized that as worthless as this creature was it was his only chance of finding Kathryn. "Do you know where Captain Janeway is? Are you responsible for her disappearance?" he asked with unnerving calm. Q2 pretended to think. "Yes, and yes." Chakotay lost his control. "Why! You have no right to abduct people. What are your motives? What do you want? Bring her back!" "My, my you certainly are full of questions and bravado aren't you. But, I can't bring her back. You'll just have to find her. You see, you humans are supposed to be Q's project. But, he has been ignoring your little group lately. I've been interested in finding out what it is about your species that he finds so fascinating for quite a while now. Ever since he was temporarily stripped of his powers I guess. Anyway, when I saw this opportunity to conduct an experiment I took it. Your objective is to find your Captain, and while you are scampering about I'll be able to gain some valuable information." B'Elanna spoke up from the far end of the table. "You mean to tell me this is all an experiment? You kidnapped the Captain for research?" "Yes, I suppose you could say that. Well," Q2 rose from his seat, "You have a lot to do and I really must withdraw. It wouldn't be proper to contaminate the experiment. Ta-ta now." And with a flourishing wave he vanished.
*****Janeway's location***** Kathryn returned to the room she had awakened in and gently sat down. Caressing the baby who seemed to enjoy doing somersaults inside her womb, she reflected on her situation. It could have been worse. Wherever it was she now found herself, there had once been a thriving technologically advanced civilization. From the look of things it had been abandoned for quite a long time. There didn't appear to be any sign of sentient life left on the planet. The good news was that many structures remained intact. Not only would she have shelter, but with a little luck she might be able to coax a computer or two back on line. That would be her priority, it was the key to finding out where she was and to contacting Voyager. The baby had finally settled down probably because she was off her feet for the first time in several hours. "Don't worry, Little One," she softly said. "I'm sure Daddy is looking for us. I'll give you a few lessons in basic computer engineering and the two of us will make it easier for him to spot us." Kathryn desperately hoped she had not just lied to her baby.
It was hot. Kathryn wiped the sweat from her eyes and cast a wary look around her. So far, so good. She checked the makeshift belt around her ever-increasing middle to make sure her weapon was secure. The dagger still hung in its scabbard. With a grunt, she picked up her bucket of water and continued back to camp. It had been 18 days since she had awakened on this planet. 18 days with no sign of any other sentient being. 18 days with no way home. 18 days without her ship. 18 days without Chakotay. 18 days closer to the birth of her child. Kathryn tried not to think about the possibility of giving birth here, alone. But as the weeks flew by she was more and more often forced to consider that dangerous scenario. The Captain clamped down on her fear. If it was to be, she would face it- as she had faced Cardassians, Romulans and Kazon. Inside Kathryn was terrified. She reached her camp and opened the door. Crossing the now tidy room in which she had first found herself she carefully emptied the bucket of water into the reservoir. Spilling the contents was to be avoided; lugging one bucket a day was all she wanted to risk, the exertion was not good for the baby and the danger from predators was always immediate. She began what was by now her daily routine. First, fetch the water, and next, wash herself as best as possible. At this point in the day she often daydreamed of warm soapy baths. It had been a long time since she had felt truly clean. She thought of her last night on Voyager. Chakotay had been so thoughtful, drawing her a bath and allowing her to soak away the peevishness she had been feeling. She sighed, better to push those thoughts away. They wouldn't help her get home. She hung up her washcloth and began to fix breakfast. She had found several edible plants nearby and with scrap material she had fashioned several traps which provided meat. It wasn't great fare -- in fact it made Neelix look like a master chef -- but it was food, and the baby needed her to eat. After breakfast she returned to her major task - the computer. She had had quite a bit of success with the strange machine, it was possible that she could have it up and running in 1 or 2 days. She only needed a few more things. Later today when the heat was at its worst and most of the dangerous animals asleep, she would try to scavenge in a few more buildings. She patted the baby and was rewarded with a solid kick and a somersault. She watched the baby turn, marveling at the shark fin traveling across her stomach. In spite of her situation she smiled, Chakotay was still with her as long as his baby remained. "OK. Little One, let's get back to work. This is a power conduit." She knew the baby couldn't understand her, but talking comforted them both.
*****On Voyager***** Chakotay sat in the command chair. It wasn't the first time he had sat there in the past six years, but this time was the first time he felt out of place. He shouldn't be here. This was Kathryn's chair, Kathryn's ship. But she wasn't here. Hadn't been in over two weeks. He had never felt so alone. "Commander, I've got it." reported Harry, enthusiasm spilling into his voice. "The signal is on a bearing mark 05,10,03." "Set course correction and engage Mr. Paris, warp 8" ordered Chakotay. "Aye sir. Course corrected, warp 8" answered Tom. Chakotay leaned back in the seat. Finally. Maybe this will be it Kathryn, he thought. Hold on a little longer love, I'm coming. The signal they were following was a standard Starfleet comm-badge signal originating from no discernable source. He supposed it was Q2's idea of bait. It worked. Every time sensors detected the signal they set course at high warp. When the signal disappeared they returned to impulse and began a standard search pattern. They had found nothing yet. Each time they had been close to dejection the signal would appear and they would be off in pursuit again. The cat - and-mouse was almost more than Chakotay could take. He rubbed his numb face and tried not to think about his wife and unborn child. Tom looked over his shoulder. The Commander looked like hell. "Paris to Torres." he hailed quietly. "Yes, Tom?" came B'Elanna's voice. "I think now would be a good time for that conversation we talked about." "Agreed. I'm on my way. How does he look?" "Like he hasn't slept or eaten in a week, but what do you expect." A few minutes later B'Elanna entered the bridge. She headed strait for Chakotay who was now pacing behind Harry. "Commander, could I have a word with you?" "Sure, B'Elanna." "Privately, please." Chakotay gave her a puzzled look, but led her into the Ready Room. Chakotay was her best friend, and the Klingon felt no need to dance around the issue. "Chakotay, when was the last time you slept?" He shrugged, "A day or so ago. I haven't been able to rest since we lost the last signal." "You can't keep going like this Chakotay. You need to sleep." Chakotay slumped down onto the couch. "I can't B'Elanna, every time I close my eyes I fear I'll miss the next clue." He looked up at his friend and B'Elanna saw more pain in his eyes than she would have thought possible. "I can feel her out there, B'Elanna. She's alone and scared for the baby, I have to find her." "My friend, you are a wreck. I know you are worried, but you need sleep. You need to be ready when we do find the Captain, and we will find her. There won't be anything for you to do until the signal stops." He knew she was right. Kathryn would kill him if something went wrong with the rescue or her ship because he was tired. He tapped his communicator. "Chakotay to Tuvok." "Tuvok here." "You have the bridge Lieutenant. I'm going to try and get some sleep." "A logical course of action, sir." Chakotay smiled in spite of himself. When was the last time the Vulcan had called HIM logical. He made his way to their quarters. He didn't turn on the lights as he crossed the room. Seeing their personal things made his heartache worse. He let himself drop onto the bed. Closing his eyes he tried to clear his mind. It wasn't easy. Images of Kathryn swam before him. Kathryn on their wedding day, the way she had looked when she had told him she was pregnant. The relaxed Kathryn he had found on New Earth, and warrior Kathryn defending her crew against the Kazon. After a long while he drifted off to sleep. In his dreams Q2 was laughing, and Kathryn was screaming.
*****Janeway's Location***** Kathryn screamed and froze in her tracks. Normally, screaming was not in the Captain's character, but the cat had scared the hell out of her. Cat was a pretty mild term she told herself as she gazed into its red eyes. It looked a lot like a terran leopard, but was more the size of a tiger. As far as she could tell it was the dominant predator in the planet's ecosystem. And it was looking at her like she was a prime side of beef.
This is what you get for pushing your luck, Kathryn. she told herself. She had known it was getting late, but had searched one last building anyway. It had been a fruitful search, she now had everything she needed to complete repairs on the computer in her 'room'. What good will that do you if the kitty eats you? she asked herself. Slowly, without taking her eyes off the cat she set down the bundle of computer components she was carrying. Even more slowly, she drew her knife. She had been hoping she wouldn't have to use it in a serious situation. It worked fine for cutting things, but she had doubts about its reliability in a battle situation. The cat began to advance. Crouching low, Kathryn stepped to better footing. For a nanosecond she looked around for a better weapon. About 10 yards away she spied a stout pole. Maybe that would do. She began to inch her way toward the pole. As she reached down to pick up the weapon she again let her eyes leave the animal. That proved to be a wrong move. With a cunning that surprised her the cat leapt at the exact moment she was most vulnerable. Surprisingly, the blow it inflicted did not appear to be delivered at full strength. Kathryn gasped as pain shot through her leg. Blood began to flow, but it didn't appear to be too deep. Rage surged through the Captain's small frame. With an iron grip she lifted the pole and brought it down squarely on the skull of the cat. The animal collapsed, it was not dead but was dazed. Quickly she retrieved her bundle and headed toward the door, limping and trailing blood. As she exited the abandoned building she heard the cat begin to regain its footing. She increased her speed to the best possible. She entered her room and dropped the weapons and components. She had to clean and bandage the wound as soon as possible. For the first time she examined the wound closely. There were deep claw marks on her thigh. One claw had gouged a substantial portion of her skin, but there did not appear to be any deep muscle trauma. She washed and bound the wound in a clean dressing. (or as close to clean as she could manage in this place.) After that she collapsed on her bed. Outside the cat screamed. He was close, probably following the trail of blood. The tears began almost immediately. Chakotay, were are you? I am so frightened for our baby, please hurry. In a few moments her tears had subsided and she drifted into an exhausted slumber.
Chakotay awoke in a cold sweat. He looked at the clock, 8 hours. It sounded good, but he wasn't sure his sleep had done him any good. He had tossed and turned through one bad dream after another. Now his desperation to find her was doubled, but so was his resolve. Rising from the bed he stripped and headed into the bathroom. He showered slowly letting the water wash away the tension in his muscles. The water flowed over his dark head, across his tightly knotted shoulders and downward. He felt the tension draining from his broad chest, down his muscled back, through his hips and into his hard legs. He imagined it washing away from his feet and into the drain. He felt better as he stepped out and dried his body. Putting on a clean uniform he headed for the Bridge, skipping the Mess Hall-he just wasn't up to eating. Beta shift was on duty when he arrived, but he did notice that Tuvok had remained in command. He's just as worried as the rest of us, he just won't show it, thought Chakotay. He debriefed the Vulcan and dismissed him with a smile, the only thanks he knew the Vulcan would accept. They were still tracking the signal. He decided to review the sensor log reports in the Ready Room. He entered the Captain's sanctuary and sat at her desk. He looked around at the room so absolutely hers. This was her think-tank, the place she came to when the pressures of duty were great. He knew that if he closed his eyes he would be able to feel her spirit's echo. He resisted the temptation. Kathryn, if you can feel my presence then know that I love you. A bright flash watered his vision, when he could see clearly Q2 was lounging on the couch. He was laughing. "I'm beginning to see what Q finds so interesting about you humans. Are you all so overly attached to one another?" Chakotay scowled at the self titled "higher life form" responsible for their unbearable situation. "I wouldn't expect you to understand. But that attachment is probably our greatest strength. The success and betterment of the human race is based on our desire to find that bond. It is the fuel of all our desire." Q2 rolled his eyes. "It all looks so domestic." "Q unless you're here to return my wife, why don't you go play in a quantum singularity." Q2 smirked, "Don't be too rude my little test subject, or you just might never find her. I just stopped by to thank you for the wonderful data. You're responding quite well by the way. Now pay attention," he rose and walked toward the wall, his smile no longer visible, "it gets harder from here." He stepped through the outer hull and was gone. Chakotay hid his face in his hands. He wasn't sure how much more he could take. "Praxton to Commander Chakotay." "Yes, Mr. Praxton, what is it?" "Sir, the signal has stopped." Chakotay sighed, Here we go again. He stepped out onto the Bridge. "Reduce speed to one-half impulse. Begin standard sector search pattern. Full sensor analysis." He settled into the command chair as the crew began to increase their activity. He watched them with satisfaction and took heart. They were a good crew both Maquis and 'Fleet, together they would find the Captain. Two days later they entered a solar system with 5 M-Class planets. "Commander," reported Harry, "I'm receiving the signal again. All 5 habitable planets are registering as the source of the signal." Chakotay's spirit soared, maybe this was it. Kathryn could be in this system. "Set course for the nearest planet, Mr. Paris. We'll just take a closer look at them, one by one."
Kathryn felt hope for the first time in the 21 days she had been stuck on the planet. As near as she could tell, the computer was now fully functional. "Well, no time to waste," she said to her unborn child, "let's find out were we are." She of course could not read the written text on the screen, but the mathematical entries, stellar charts, and computer code were easily understood by the scientist-turned-Captain. It would take time, but she was confident she would find a way to save herself and the baby. By the end of the day she was exhausted and suffering from a horrible headache, but she went to bed filled with hope and determination. The next morning she awoke to rain. "Wonderful. I have to go out in that?!" she exclaimed looking out the window. Visibility wasn't good, she estimated about 5 meters. Well, there was no help for it, she would have to go out. Her scientific curiosity had gotten the best of her yesterday and she had neglected her household chores. That meant that both the food stores and water reservoir were now well below comfort level. Still limping from the cat's attack four days earlier, she moved to the door. She pulled on the tattered canvas she had been using as a cloak and stepped out into the cold wet morning. Visibility was worse than she had anticipated. The rain fell in sheets, pelting her face with enough force to numb her skin. She would have to hurry. She picked up her pace and made it 40 meters - nearly half the distance to her 'garden', before she tripped. Luckily, she managed to catch herself before her ripening abdomen struck the ground. Pain shot through her body anyway, as she reacted to the fall she felt something pulled beyond its ability to stretch. The pain in her abdomen was sharp enough to bring tears to her eyes. Gritting her teeth she forced her body back onto it's feet. Slowly and with difficulty, she made her way to the plants and traps which provided her nourishment. Torrential rain and staggering pain made the process of retrieving food seem to last forever. When she held more than a day's supply she eagerly headed back to camp. Kathryn concentrated on the ground hoping to avoid a second fall. As she reached her door she glanced up and saw the cat watching her. It made no move to attack, but she felt her blood pressure rising anyway. How long had it been watching her? She quickly opened the door and retreated to the safety of her camp. She looked out the window, the cat had not moved. She forced herself to relax. Wincing in pain she moved to start her breakfast. As the day wore on her pain faded, only flaring when she turned or moved too quickly. She began to form an hypothesis about the nature of the data she was accessing on the computer, and it filled her with hope. Periodically she looked out the window. Each time, the cat remained; ignoring the storm around it and staring at her camp. It was there when she went to bed, and it was still there when she awoke the next morning.
The cat stayed all through the next day. Kathryn began to worry, she ate sparingly trying to conserve her food. If it didn't leave soon she would be forced to risk another confrontation. The good news was that she had been able to devise a way to call for help with the supplies on hand. It had taken the better part of her engineering skill, but she had managed to link her combadge with the computer's communication system. She had it set on a repeating signal. All that was left was to wait and hope. Hope that some passing ship found her, and more importantly hope the cat moved.
*****Janeway's Location- 3 days later***** It was mid day, the hottest portion of the day. Kathryn drank the last drop of water in her reserve. Well, that's it Captain. No more options, it's time to act. She was thirsty, the heat drained the moisture from her body faster than she could replace it even with a full reservoir. But water wasn't her only problem. She hadn't eaten all day. She had eaten only one small meal yesterday. No matter what happened she had to act now, before the situation completely robbed her of her fading strength. Pulling together every shred of resolve and confidence that had helped her reach the rank of Captain she limped to the window. The cat was there, but sleeping in the noon heat. She caressed the baby knowing that if she was not pregnant she would have dealt with this situation long ago.. She picked up the bucket, strapped on her dagger and hefted the pole. With such a small arsenal she stood little chance, but she opened the door anyway. Moving as silently and quickly as possible she headed for the creek and her garden. By the grace of whatever gods looked over this planet she made it to the stream. Dropping to the ground she drank deeply from the flowing water. Standing she checked for the cat. The building hid his stalking place and he was nowhere in sight, she took this as a good sign. Quickly, she filled her bucket and then began to collect vegetables; munching the dirty plants as she went. They weren't very tasty but at this point she didn't care. When she had all she could carry she headed back to camp. The weight of the bucket and the length of the pole made walking difficult. The pain in her abdomen returned in full force. Sucking in breaths through gritted teeth she continued. The pain was great, but Kathryn refused to let it stop her. She rounded the corner of the building and looked for the cat. He was still in his spot, he appeared to be sleeping. She took 3 quiet steps, the cat opened his eyes. She took two more and he stood. She swallowed the fear that was bubbling at the surface of her consciousness. Get a hold of yourself, Captain! She backed against the side of the building. Setting down her food and water she lifted the pole into a defensive position. The cat leapt. With all the rage and fear she had been bottling inside her, Kathryn swung at her attacker. She was rewarded with a solid crack against the animal's head. The blow broke the pole and blood flowed from the cat's head. The cat's momentum carried it forward and it slammed into her. Kathryn lost her balance, but managed to draw her dagger before the animal could pin her arm against the ground. The cat raised its upper body, screaming and growling in pain and rage. Looking into it's razor-toothed maw she knew this would be her only chance. As the cat paused, readying himself for a lunge at her jugular, she struck. Her dagger pierced the animal in the throat. Blood, hot and moist spread over her face and arms, but none of it was hers. The animal screamed in pain and staggered away from her. Gasping for breath Kathryn tried to regain her feet. Pain streaked through her body. The cat came toward her again. Bracing her back against the building, she gripped her dagger. "Come on you, let's finish this." The cat took a slow step, growling low. Suddenly, he froze. He began to thrash and howl apparently unable to take another step. There was a familiar flash. Kathryn looked up, already knowing who would be standing over her. "Q, are you responsible for my being here?!" "Kathy, I swear I had nothing to do with it. I came to rescue you as soon as I heard." Janeway eyed him distrustfully. Q sounded sincere, but she had learned not to trust him. "Prove it." Just then the cat gave a strong lurch and raised himself onto his hind legs. The next instant the cat was gone and a blond humanoid stood in his place. "Q!' he yelled. "What are you doing? I'm conducting an experiment here." Janeway was stunned. She looked at the being who only a moment ago had been the terrifying animal she had tried to kill. Realization of his identity was nearly instantaneous; another Q.
Kathryn managed to gain her feet. The pain made her head swim, but she was determined to meet the Q in a strong position. "One of you explain. Now." she ordered. The familiar Q spoke, "I had nothing to do with it Kathy. Nano-brain here decided to conduct a little experiment while my back was turned." Q2 rolled his eyes. "You weren't even paying attention to this separated group. I didn't hurt any of them, see she's fine." he pointed in Janeway's direction. "An experiment! What have you done to my ship? Where is my crew?" Janeway demanded. Q2 waved his hand, "They're fine," he began to laugh, "It really was a lark. I've had them scrambling all over the sector looking for you. They've been 'oh so distraught. Especially that big dark one with the ugly picture on his head." Kathryn's ire began to boil over with his offhand description of the emotional torture he had subjected her crew to. His description of her husband did little to improve her mood. "You have no right to do those things. Honestly, I will never understand how beings who claim to be so advanced can continue to act like children! Trust me, the rest of the sentient universe does not need or desire your manipulations." Q2 turned to Q, "It really has been a lot of fun, but why do you continue to dabble with them? I'm already growing bored of their theatrics." Q was watching Janeway closely. Absently he answered his brother. "You're not looking for the right things. And if you think these hysterics have been bad I've got a redheaded doctor and a bald Captain you wouldn't believe." He began to look concerned as Janeway tried to walk; obviously with pain. "Kathy, are you all right? Is the baby all right?" "You're omnipotent, why don't you tell me?" Janeway snapped. "Oh, now you've done it brother, she never uses that tone until you've stepped over the line. You still have a lot to learn about dealing with humans." Q complained. "Why don't you let me help Kathy." He paused his gaze growing distant. "Where did you leave them Q? Oh, there they are. Oh my! That oaf Chakotay really is in a tizzy isn't he?" Q snapped his fingers. "There, if I know my Starfleet humans they should be joining us momentarily." Kathryn breathed a sigh of relief. Maybe just this once Q could be trusted. Maybe it was almost over. "Q I want some answers. Is the Continuum going to allow a member to act in this outrageous way?" "I don't see why not. All he really did was to step into my territory." She sighed, this time in resignation. She had known Q's new attitude wouldn't last. Any retort she would have leveled at the Federation's largest menace was silenced by the whine of transporters. Chakotay, Tuvok and a squad of Voyager's security force materialized 10 yards away. Chakotay seemed to know exactly where she was standing even before he materialized. The moment he was free of the transport he began to move in her direction. Shouldering his way between the Q without a word, he walked to his wife. His eyes roamed over her small frame searching for any sign of trouble. She stood before him covered in the cat's blood, a sight which filled him with horror. He stopped only inches from her. With a shaking hand he reached out and gently touched her arm. Kathryn knew that he was restraining himself. She could see the relief and desire in his eyes, but she also could see that he was unwilling to break protocol until she gave him the word. She sensed rather than saw Tuvok and his men placing themselves between their commanding officers and the Q. Normally the proximity of her crew would have made her hesitate to lower her Captain's demeanor, but this time she did not falter. Before Chakotay's gentle touch could be withdrawn she threw herself into his embrace. She felt his powerful arms wrap themselves around her as he buried his face in her hair. The sensation gave her greater joy than she could ever remember experiencing. Tears began to fall and she allowed them, with no concern for who witnessed the Captain crying. Chakotay breathed in his wife's scent. He felt his spirit rise from the hell in which it had been submerged. She was crying. He knew it was mostly from relief, but with crewmembers so close, she would regret it later. He whispered into her ear, "I love you Kathryn. Let's go home, and you can tell me all about it when we have some privacy." Kathryn smiled at her husband, he always knew what to say. Stepping back she dried her tears and let her Captain's face fall into place. "Mr. Tuvok, it's good to see you." she said to her friend. "It is equally good to see you Captain." "There is not much to do here Lieutenant. You will need to have an engineering team beamed down. I want the working computer in this building downloaded. I have a hunch its files will be useful." Tuvok acknowledged his orders and began to issue his own commands. Janeway turned on the Q. "Are you two finished with your fun and games? If so why don't you get the hell out of here." Q2 looked shocked. "Come on Q let's get out of here. I think I've had enough of your little pets. I don't think I want to play with them anymore." With a flash he was gone. "Well, he certainly is ill mannered, eh Kathy?" observed Q. "I'm glad all us Q are not like that. Lucky for you I'm the most charming of all." Kathryn looked at the pompous pain in the ass who had managed to save her. She didn't have the time or desire to waste on him right now. Without a word she turned her back on him. The twisting action sent another streak of pain through her body and she gasped involuntarily. "Kathryn!" Chakotay's eyes flashed his concern. "I don't think it's much," she said trying to reassure him. "I've been having a little pain. Why don't you take me home and we'll let the Doctor check it out." Chakotay nodded not trusting his voice to work around the lump in his throat. He tapped his combadge and cleared his throat. "Voyager, two to beam up." He smiled his first genuine smile in 3 weeks. "Roll out the red carpet boy's she's home."
Janeway materialized on the transporter pad. She stood a moment taking in each sound and smell of her ship. It was good to be home. Chakotay immediately came to her side. "Let's get you to sickbay Captain." "Not just yet," she said refusing to move. She activated ship communication. "Janeway to Kim." "Kim here, welcome home Captain." "Thank you Harry," she replied with a smile, "Ensign, Tuvok is arranging for an engineering team to retrieve the files from a computer on the surface. I would like you to coordinate with engineering. Get the universal translator working on the language. I would like a summary of the contents of the files in 3 hours. Use any personnel you need Harry, I think this could be important." "Aye, Captain." Chakotay was laughing at her as she finished issuing Kim's orders. "Two seconds back on board and you're already worried about giving commands. Don't worry Captain, no one has forgotten who is in charge around here." he teased. She gave him a playful punch in the arm. "Careful, Commander, I'd hate to have to put you on report for disrespect of authority." "You know it wouldn't be the first time. But, hold off for a minute. I'm going to show a lot more disrespect if my commanding officer doesn't hall her butt to sickbay." Kathryn smiled. "OK you win. Why is it I always give in to you?" "Years of practice on my part. If you'll recall I spent over 3 years just getting you to say yes to a date."
In sickbay Kathryn suffered through what she viewed as an overly thorough examination. She was concerned about the pain she had been experiencing, but the Doctors attentions seemed more than cautious. Perhaps it was due to Chakotay's intense scrutiny of every test the Doc performed. Finally he announced that there was nothing seriously wrong. "It's about time. I could have told you that when I first walked in." she commented wryly. "I will never cease to be amazed at the cavalier attitude Starfleet Captains have about their health. My memory banks are full of amazingly stupid examples. Do they teach a course in childish disregard for self preservation at the Academy?" countered the EMH. "That will be enough Doctor." warned the Captain. "Would you mind giving me some useful information about the health of my baby?" "The baby is fine, Captain. You were in perfect physical shape before your abduction, it helped to protect the child. You on the other hand have suffered a sprain in the round abdominal ligaments. It is nothing serious, easily fixed, but it does cause severe pain. I will treat you for the sprain now, and I recommend two days of restricted duty to allow them to heal. Janeway was about to comment on the unnecessary nature of two days of half duty, but Chakotay spoke first. Probably because he knew what she had been going to say. "Thanks Doc. Two days of rest will do her good." He looked at Kathryn daring her to argue, not as Captain; but as his wife. "Besides," he added touching her chin, "it will give you time to tell me all about your adventure." At that point she decided to acquiesce. They were probably right. And besides she could always say she was resting and still work in their quarters.
Kathryn sat in her quarters feeling better than she had in quite some time. A real bath, some good food, and some quiet personal time with Chakotay were all she had needed to make her feel normal again. The pain was gone, thanks to the Doctor. He had also said that the baby was very near full term. She was supposed to take it easy for the next couple of weeks. "It won't be long now, Little One." She heard Chakotay call from the other room, "Who are you talking to, love?" She chuckled and smiled at him as he came into the room. "I was just telling the baby how much I'm looking forward to moving on with motherhood." Chakotay sat down next to her and began to lace his fingers through her hair which was still loose from her bath. "Our Little One can wait for a few days. He's had you all alone for 3 weeks, it's my turn." He tenderly cupped her face with his left hand and leaned into her. Their kiss was deep and comforting, yet filled with passion. Kathryn felt her heart skip a beat, as always Chakotay's touch brought her close to losing control of her body. One kiss turned into many; each more passionate and demanding. She moaned when Chakotay's hands began to travel over her body, searching out the places he knew pleased her. She returned the favor by nibbling his neck and raking her fingers up and down his inner thigh; a combination she knew would excite him beyond measure. Both were incredibly frustrated when her communicator chirped. "Kim to Janeway." Breathless and flushed Kathryn pulled away from her husband. Scrambling to find her voice and praying she didn't sound as swept away as she felt, she spoke. "Janeway here." "Captain, we've finished the analysis you asked for. We can meet you in the conference room immediately." "Negative, Mr. Kim." interrupted Chakotay. "The Captain is on restricted duty. You and your team may make your report here in our quarters." "Very well, Commander. Captain?" "It's all right Mr. Kim." answered Kathryn running a finger along Chakotay's jaw line and down his neck. "I think I'm willing to let the Commander bully me just this once. I'll be waiting. Janeway out." Kathryn rose from the couch giving Chakotay a hungry yet disappointed look. "Don't worry, Kathryn," he assured her, also rising and taking her into his arms. He kissed her deeply enough to make her head spin. Breaking the kiss, he rested his forehead against hers. "I don't plan on letting this meeting run long. You and I have unfinished business." She giggled wickedly. "I'll hold you to that, love. Now let me go slip on a robe and check my hair. I'd hate for the crew to see the Captain when she is so obviously in disarray from a good groping." He let her go, giving her a wink. "It was a good grope, wasn't it."
Less than 2 minutes later the door chime sounded. "Come." Chakotay replied. The door slid open to reveal Harry, B'Elanna and Tom. The three officers stepped eagerly into the room. Harry was the firsts to speak. "Captain, we have good news. You were right! The files we downloaded from the surface are a gold mine. His high spirits and enthusiasm were contagious. Janeway found herself grinning back at the young man. Sometimes she forgot how young he still was. "Why don't you slow down Harry, and start from the beginning." She crossed the room, lowered herself into a chair and propped up her feet. B'Elanna growled and rolled her eyes at her friend. "What Harry is trying to say Captain is that the files contain an amazing amount of useful information. The planet, named Aldur by the natives, was home to a far traveled population. They mapped and catalogued vast areas of this region of space. Apparently they were searching for a mythical homeworld they called UL. About 100 years ago, they found it. The entire population migrated." Tom broke in at this point. "The truly wonderful part Captain, is that their files on stellar cartography and astrolocation are invaluable to us. They can save us a great amount of time. We long ago left the area of space Neelix had any knowledge of; these files will fill the void." "Excellent work, people." complimented Janeway. "I was optimistic about their nature, but this sounds better than I had hoped." "One more thing Captain," added Harry, "while the material is 100 years out of date, the Aldurans did keep detailed accounts of other societies in this area. We can use those files as a rough guide in planning our stops." "Wonderful Harry. I'll be putting you in charge of laying out a projected course. Work closely with Tom with regard to navigational needs." She stood. "Now, if you people will excuse me, I am a little tired and I'm looking forward to sleeping in my own bed. Dismissed." The helmsman, engineer and chief of ops quickly left. None were completely fooled by the Captain's dismissal. Chakotay turned to her with concern. "If you're that tired Kathryn I'll turn down the bed for you." "No. I am tired, love, but you and I have some unfinished business. I haven't seen or felt your body in over 3 weeks and I intend to completely reacquaint myself." She began nibbling on his neck and walking backward; he was forced to follow along. "Right this way, Commander." she purred into his ear. "I need a refresher course on 'How to make love to your First Officer'." Chakotay began to return the attention as they reached the bed. "Yes Ma'am."
Kathryn sat on the Bridge. It had been two weeks since her return to Voyager and everything seemed to be back to normal. They had seen no sign of Q, in fact no sign of anyone. Harry's report on the files of Aldur did indeed prove to be invaluable. They were making good progress on their journey and for a change had some idea of were they were headed. That sense of informed progress did wonders for morale. She turned her head and called over her shoulder, "Harry, has that report from Quartermaster come through?" "It was just uploaded to my station, Captain." "Route it into my Ready Room, I'll... ooophh". Pain in her lower abdomen forced all thought from her head. She paused until it passed, neither speaking nor aware of the concerned looks of the Bridge crew. "Captain?" asked Paris after it had passed. "Is everything alright?" Kathryn smiled. "Yes Tom, I'm fine." She raised her voice to be heard by all the Bridge personnel. "Let's keep this to ourselves people. If that was what I think it was there's no need to hurry. And that silence includes Commander Chakotay. He couldn't do anything about it and I want those modifications he's working on completed. Is that understood?" She heard echoes of "Yes Ma'am," from every station. "Now, Mr. Kim, please route that report into my Ready Room. Tuvok, you have the bridge." The rest of the day passed quietly. She felt an occasional contraction, but the pain was nothing she couldn't handle. She had been waiting for this for a long time, she was glad the day had finally arrived. She was once again on the Bridge and seated in the command chair when Chakotay returned. "Captain," he stopped in front of her to report. "The modifications are complete. We should get an increase of 20% from the shuttle sensors." "Thank you Commander." She smiled at him and motioned for him to be seated. "Things here are rather quiet, just another Sunday drive in the Delta Quadrant. I've been looking over..." Another contraction seized her and she was forced to stop talking. Chakotay's eyes grew as large as the ship's saucer as he realized what was happening. Excited and nervous he jumped to his feet. "How long has this been going on?" he asked. "Off and on all day. I didn't want to disturb your work." "How far apart are they?" "I don't know. I haven't been keeping track." At this point Harry spoke up. No one on the Bridge was giving them any privacy anyway. "The contractions are now 6 minutes apart Commander." Janeway gave a startled look at her Chief of Ops. "Harry, have you been timing me?" "Yes, Ma'am. I thought it might be a good idea. Just in case." "Thank you, Harry." replied Chakotay, glad that someone on the Bridge had better sense than his wife. "Kathryn, I think you should head to sickbay." "Not just yet. I've still got a little time, and my shift doesn't end for another hour." For the thousandth time Chakotay marveled at the stubborn nature of the woman he loved. Better not complain too much, he told himself. It's one of the things that first attracted you. Knowing that he would not be able to change her mind he forced himself to retake his seat. But he didn't even try to work. Instead he watched his wife. He didn't have to wait long. A few minutes later she again cried out in pain. That was a lot stronger than the last one, thought Kathryn. "Time Mr. Kim?" Chakotay demanded. "4 minutes, Commander." "Chakotay," panted Kathryn, "I think I better get to sickbay." "What a novel idea." he quipped dryly. "Tuvok, you have the Bridge." Gently he helped the Captain stand and escorted her to the lift. It only took 3 minutes to reach sickbay, but as they entered another contraction seized Janeway. "Doctor! Kes!" Chakotay called out as Kathryn squeezed his hand hard enough to bring tears to his eyes. Both of Voyagers doctors hurried out of the EMH's office. "How far apart are the contractions?" asked the Doctor. "Less than 4 minutes." responded Chakotay. "I couldn't convince her to leave the Bridge." "I see. More of that Captaincy Medical Expertise?" "Doctor, could we discuss my failings as a patient some other time?" gasped Kathryn. Kes was already making preparations around a biobed. "Help her over here, Commander." coaxed the Ocompan. Half carrying her and half pulling, Chakotay managed to guide his wife to the bed. Once she was on the bed and being monitored, he tried to relax. It seemed an impossible task. His heart was pounding, his hands were shaking and he knew his face held a silly grin, but he just could not find a peaceful center. Kathryn began to laugh at him. "Love, you really need to calm down. Everything is going to be fine." "How can you be so calm, Kathryn?" "Because you are here. We're on the ship, the Doctor and Kes are here. It's a much better situation than I feared I would face on Aldur. If I'm not alone, I know everything will be all right." Another contraction began and Kathryn cried out. Instinctively she reached for Chakotay. She found him right next to her. Taking her hand in his left, he used his right to stroke her brow. As the contraction passed he tenderly kissed her. "I know I've told you I love you, but I don't think I ever realized how much until this moment." Kathryn looked at the man bending over her. How had she been so lucky? At the time, their abduction into the Delta Quadrant had seemed like the worst possible reality. Now she thanked the Caretaker, if not for his interference she would never have found Chakotay. With him she had learned a deeper connection than she ever dreamed had existed. His love was endless, a constant source of pleasure and renewal. And her love for him? The intensity was sometimes frightening, but she would never trade it. Another contraction racked her body. Kathryn bore the pain bravely, Chakotay bore the pain in his hand only slightly less stoically. "7 centimeters Captain," Kes reported. "It won't be long now. You are doing very well." Kathryn closed her eyes hoping to rest before the next contraction hit. Even through closed eyelids she saw the flash. I don't believe it, she thought. "Is the baby here yet?" asked Q. Chakotay straitened and stepped toward Q. "What do you want Q? We're a little busy." "I just popped in to see the baby and to let you know Q has been sanctioned by the Continuum. Now, let me see the baby." Chakotay stepped into Q's path, stopping him from approaching Kathryn. "Stay away from my wife." he threatened. "If I didn't think you would turn me into a radish I'd bash your head in for what happened to her." "Come now. It wasn't my fault. Q did it. I was the one who rescued her, remember?" Chakotay could hear Kathryn suffering another labor pain behind him. "Q I'm telling you again. Stay away from my wife!" It was clear from his tone and the fire in his eyes that the Commander was not making false threats. Q snorted in contempt. "Very well, Chik-o-stick, I'll be leaving. But a thank you would be nice. After all, don't you think it's odd that Kathy found the one computer with all the stellar cartography information?" "Are you trying to tell me you're responsible for that stroke of luck?" "Why, yes. I do believe that is what I was saying. You are so perceptive." "Oh, Please. You go out of your way not to help us. If you wanted to help you could have sent us home years ago." "We've been over this before, Cochise. There are things you have to do out here. I'm finished leading the Federation along the path to enlightenment. I've spent nearly two decades on Picard and he still isn't making it. You're going to have to do it yourself." Kathryn gave a strangled cry as another contraction washed through her. "Q!" she screamed. "Get off my ship!" "Well, really, Kathy. You don't have to be rude." No one was sorry when he flashed out of existence. Chakotay turned around and took his place at Kathryn's side. Kes looked up from her monitors and smiled. "It's time, Captain."
Thirty minutes later Chakotay held his son. The baby was beautiful, soft black hair framed his little face. His bright blue eyes stared up at his father with what Chakotay would swear was recognition. "Thank you Kathryn." The Captain sat propped in bed looking more beautiful and happy than he had ever seen her. She reached for the small bundle. Reluctantly Chakotay handed her their son. Holding the baby Kathryn felt the last door in her heart open. Life was now truly complete. She had adventure and discovery as the Captain of Voyager. She had desire and passion as Chakotay's wife. And now, she had fulfillment and peace as Kola's mother. "He is our future, Kathryn. Our future in the Delta Quadrant. Our future together, the two of us combined as one." Chakotay leaned down and tenderly kissed the baby sleeping contentedly in his mother's arms. Then just as tenderly, he kissed Kathryn. Finis. Now really, what did you think? Any and all comments and criticisms are welcome. Author's note: Kola is the Santee Sioux word meaning 'my friend'. |
